Posted in A moms opinion, Aislyn

My 10 year old just told me off……..

So it’s been a few weeks of running around and burying myself in getting our routine right again. Let’s just say that it’s not going well, but we are afloat and at least I know my kids are learning something every day. Anyway, let’s get to my title……… yes, this happened…… my 10 year literally served me metaphorical medicine and made me drink a massive lesson. So, let me set the stage. I try to get my homeschooled kids to attend as many “school” things as they can – so that they can see what it’s like for formal school going kids. So, this time we were at my nephew’s eistedfod poetry recital. It was fun to wait around and then go and sit in silence while he nervously waited for his turn and then proceeded to present his poetry. Now, I honestly don’t remember the exact conversation I was having with Aislyn – but I do remember what followed. (This is important to note – because it means I learned the lesson and completely forgot what I did before that) So, she’s told me something and I think it’s hilarious or cute or something like that and because I thought so, I lean over to my sister and proceed to repeat what my daughter has just said, but in a version as I perceived it. This! is my demise! I tend to take what is said and add my flavour and perspective to the situation. ESPECIALLY with my kids!Anyway, after she hears me tell the little opinion or whatever to my sister – she proceeds to tap me on the arm and say this, (her exact words) “Mom, Aunty is like the toast and you are taking my words like butter and spreading them all over her instead of just keeping it to yourself”…Yes.Just take a moment (as I did)..I honestly had no words for her. I had no come back. I knew what she said was right, and she wasn’t rude about it because she whispered and used a respectful tone. Guys! I was flabbergasted! I couldn’t believe my 10 year old, so eloquently reprimanded me and everything she said was spot on!There were so many things that I took from this MASSIVE moment.

  1. I really need to work on my exaggeration thang and make sure that I relay a story as exactly as I can – always.
  2. I absolutely LOVE that she felt the freedom to address me like she did. I really have always wanted my kids to be able to call me out on my stuff. I see this as an opportunity to grow because they see things that I can, honestly, fix.
  3. THE METAPHOR absolutely floored me! I couldn’t believe that she had thought of and communicated, so clearly (she used hand gestures) what she was witnessing.
  4. I also love how there was a massive lesson in that very metaphor for me.

As much as my pride and my ego took a knock, I was happy to take the blow because it was an impressive milestone on my daughters part. I really hope that she exercises this part of her personality and expression a lot more because it showed me so much about what type of person she is becoming and that, my friends, is hectically exciting!

    1. Thanks so much!! She is just awesome to watch. Being open to learn from everyone has always been my heart, even if it’s coming from my kids. Where better-they’re more genuine in their opinion most times than adults anyway 💜💜
